Today is Friday, July 22. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. It’s like a heatwave: There’s no “like” about it, we are in the middle of a heatwave! (But we couldn’t help but give a tip of our keyboard to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas today.) The National Weather Service’s excessive heat warning continues today as temperatures are expected to reach 99. It will feel like over 105 degrees, though, as the heat index will be over 100.
  2. Cooling center open: The today for residents in need to cooling off. The school’s cafeteria will be open from 12 to 8 p.m. today. However, no food is available in the cafeteria because the school is in summer-mode.
  3. Election update: Today is the last day to obtain nomination papers from the city clerk’s office at City Hall. .
  4. In case you missed it: We here at Woburn Patch really wanted to hit the beach yesterday. But since we had work to do, and it was really hot out there, we decided to hit, well, a former beach instead. We wandered over to Foley Beach at and took in the sights there. The beach is no longer, but you can see a bench that marks the old lifeguard spot and two signs that point out where the popular beach once stood. .
  5. Alison, my aim is true: On this day in 1977, Elvis Costello’s first album was released in London and featured the iconic single “Alison.” Costello wrote and recorded the album while juggling a full-time job and a family, including a young son. After his album was released in England, he performed on the street outside CBS in America “protesting” the fact that his album was not picked up overseas. It was later and Costello became popular on both sides of the ocean.
