Five Things You Need to Know Today, June 14

Happy Flag Day!

"Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Let us know what you think of the feature in the comments section.

Today is Tuesday, June 14. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Cloudy and cool: After last week’s warm weather, we all thought summer was here. But today, it’s going to feel a lot more like spring as temperatures dip into the mid-5os. The National Weather Service is expecting scattered showers this morning and clouds the rest of the day.
  2. Planning Board: The Planning Board will meet tonight at to discuss several special permit applications, including a 98-unit condo complex proposal for 859 Main St. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in City Council Chambers.
  3. A fond farewell: The is saying goodbye to fifth-grade teacher Ms. Maureen Quinn and Administrative Assistant Mrs. Carolyn Agostino who are both retiring at the end of this school year. A to celebrate both women from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friends and family are invited. Ms. Quinn has been a part of the public school system for 34 years, Mrs. Agostino for 20.
  4. In case you missed it: Woburn Patch was busy festival-ing (is that a word?) with residents this weekend. After you read our coverage of the Greek Festival, make sure you check out yesterday’s story of the St. Anthony’s Festival. !
  5. Stars and Stripes: On this day in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution making the “Stars and Stripes” the official flag of the United States. The flag was made of 13 red and white stripes, representing the original 13 colonies. It also had a circle of 13 white stars on a blue background. Our flag today still has the 13 stripes, in honor of those first colonies. In 1877, 100 years later, the first Flag Day was observed.
