Today is Tuesday, June 21. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Perfect: It’s going to be a perfect first day of summer, according to the National Weather Service! The NWS is predicting all sunshine, temperatures in the low 80s and a calm wind. Sounds absolutely perfect to us!    
  2. City Council meets tonight: Lots of items to be discussed at the City Council meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Chambers. According to the agenda, there are several public hearings on the docket tonight, as well as “reconsideration of vote on total Water and Sewer Enterprise Fund and .”
  3. Seventh inning stretch: Do you love the baseball and the Boston Red Sox? Are you a senior? If the answer is yes to both questions, head over to the today at 4 p.m. with your Red Sox gear on. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served at 4:30 p.m. and singer Greg Curtis will perform at 5:30 p.m.  There will be door and raffle prizes. .  
  4. In case you missed it: A private security guard was cleaning one of his two guns Saturday afternoon and accidentally shot himself. .
  5. Mississippi Burning: On this day in 1964, three civil rights workers in Mississippi would go missing, while investigating the arson of a church. Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney were shot and killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan, with help from a Neshoba County Deputy Sheriff. The murders were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and attracted national attention. In 1967, some of the men involved were found guilty and sentenced to three to 10 years in prison. But on June 21, 2005, 80-year-old Edgar Ray Killen was found guilty and sentenced to 60 years for his role in the murders.
