Five Things You Need To Know Today, June 21

1) Heat wave!: We're not sure if two days counts as a heat wave or not, but it feels like it! According to the National Weather Service, Woburn will be a hot and steamy 97 degrees today with loads of sunshine. According to weather.com, if we hit the anticipated 97, today will be a record-breaker! The highest temp recorded in Woburn on June 21 was 91 degrees in 1997.

2) Parents helping parents: Raising a family can be the toughest job there is. But, luckily, there are groups to help you! Tonight, the support group will meet at the at 5:30 p.m. 

3) Event Spotlight: Did you not have enough of the Board of Appeals last night? Well, its meeting again tonight! The BOA will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the . Several public hearings are on the agenda, including a request for commercial use at a Washington Street property. 

4) In Case You Missed It: A Kennedy Middle School student paid tribute to late Woburn Police Officer Jack Maguire with a poster in the school building. Check out the . 

5) The murder of civil rights activists: On this day in 1964, the Ku Klux Klan stopped three civil rights activists in their tracks and murdered the trio in the woods of Mississippi. The men—Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney—were members of the Freedom Riders and were helping to register black voters in the Deep South. The men were shot and killed in the woods and buried in graves prepared by the KKK. The federal government prosecuted those involved with a final conviction brought down on June 21, 2005, the 41st anniversary of the murders.
