5) Scotland Yard breakthrough: On this day in 1905, the investigators at Scotland Yard use the newest technology—fingerprinting—to identify the murderers of a South London couple. A pair of shopkeepers were killed and their cash box stolen; but the thieves left behind a solid thumbprint. After learning that a witness saw two young men near the shop the day of the murders, Scotland Yard began looking for the killers. Alfred Stratton’s thumbprint matched the one on the cash box, and he and his brother, Albert, were convicted and later hanged for the crime.
