5) Patch is a Barbie girl!: On this day in 1959, the first Barbie doll went on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City.  Modeled after a German comic strip character named Lilli, the doll was originally intended as a gag gift for adult men to purchase in tobacco shops. But the doll quickly became popular with children and was purchased by Mattel and marketed to kids. Barbie has been controversial over the years, but more than 800 million dolls have sold—certifying Barbie's status as an icon.
