Today is Monday, May 30. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Sunshiney goodness: As we commemorate Memorial Day today, expect mostly sunny skies and temperatures close to 80 degrees. Sounds like a great day for a parade.   
  2. Memorial Day: Use your extra time today to with friends and family. The city has an extensive Memorial Day program set up, complete with parade. .

  5. Decoration Day: On this day in 1868, the first major Memorial Day observance was held to honor the Civil War dead. Graves were decorated with flowers and Gen. James Garfield spoke at Arlington National Cemetery. Several communities celebrated Memorial Day before and after the 1868 observance and in 1971, it was made a national holiday.
