  5. Invention of Corn Flakes: On this day in 1895, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg filed a patent for "flaked cereal." Kellogg, a Seventh-day Adventist, had set out to create a vegetarian food for his patients that fit the dietary restrictions of his faith. According to Wikipedia, Kellogg's goal was to impose a diet consistingly entirely of "bland foods." This fact will probably not be big component of Kellogg Corn Flakes' advertisements in the future.
