  5. Crown jewels stolen: On this day in 1671, Thomas Blood disguised himself as a priest and with three accomplices, attempted to steal the British crown jewels in London. Despite hammering down the crown and running, Blood and his mates were captured and arrested by guards. But King Charles II was impressed with the Irishman’s chutzpah and made him a member of the court.
