Five Things You Need to Know Today, Nov. 11

Today is Veterans Day.

Here are five things you need to know today:

 

1) A gray day: Although the rains will likely stop before the parade begins at 10 a.m. this morning, expect clouds during the morning. According to the National Weather Service, the sky will clear in the afternoon and temperatures will be in the low-50s.

2) Veterans breakfast: On Sunday, Nov. 13, the will hold a special service to remember veterans. Also, the will have a veterans breakfast at 11 a.m.

3) Event spotlight: The city’s will begin at 10 a.m. this morning at Central Square, near the Wyman School. The parade route will wind down Main Street toward the Common, where the city will hold a special ceremony at 11 a.m.

5) History of Veterans Day: The date of Veterans Day stems from the implementation of the armistice, outlined in the Treaty of Versailles signed by Germany and the Allied Powers, that ended World War 1 on November 11, 1918. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson officially made Nov. 11 "Armistice Day" to commemorate the end of the conflict. On June 1, 1954, Congress, at the recommendation of President Dwight Eisenhower, amended the act to replace "Armistice" with "Veterans" to honor veterans of all conflicts in which U.S. soldiers were deployed.
