Five Things You Need to Know Today, Nov. 29

Schools are collecting eyeglasses until March.

Here are five things you need to know today:

 

1) Afternoon showers: It’ll be another warm day in Woburn, helping us forget the fact that it’s nearly December! Expect temperatures to be in the mid-60s with a light wind. There may be some rain after 4 p.m. today and thunderstorms while you’re sleeping tonight.

2) Glasses collection contest: The  is holding a contest to see which school can collect the most used eye glasses. The glasses are then distributed to less fortunate people around the world. Collection boxes will be in city schools soon and remain through the month of March. The school that collects the most glasses per student will win a cash prize. Note: All types of eyeglasses, including sunglasses, with or without lenses, are needed but no cases.

3) Event spotlight: The Woburn Planning Board will meet tonight at at 7 p.m. There are two public hearings and one special permit request on the agenda.

5) Passing of a Hollywood legend: On this day in 1986, Archibald Alexander Leach, better known by his stage name Cary Grant, passed away. Grant, an English actor, who later became a U.S. citizen, had a long and fruitful career and was known for his debonair demeanor and good looks. He is best known for his films the "The Awful Truth," "Arsenic and Old Lace," "To Catch a Thief" and "North By Northwest," among other classics. Grant was twice nominated for an Academy Award and five times for a Golden Globe, but was continually looked over. He was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1970, presented by Frank Sinatra.
