5) “It can happen to anybody”: On this day in 1991, the world was stunned to learn that National Basketball Association star Magic Johnson was HIV-positive. Johnson held a press conference that was televised live, making the announcement. He said at the time, “You think it can never happen to you, that it happens only to other people. If it can happen to Magic Johnson, it can happen to anybody.” Today, Johnson is still HIV-positive, but is healthy thanks to doctors and medication.

* And a very special addition to today's Five Things: Happy Birthday, Dad! It's Local Editor Danielle Masterson's father's birthday today. Have a great day, Dad!
