Five Things You Need to Know Today, Oct. 10

Today is Columbus Day, which means City Hall and other government offices are closed today.

Here are five things you need to know today:

 

1) A delightful day: Looks like our Columbus Day will be a rather delightful one, if the National Weather Service’s forecast holds true. According to the NWS, it will be sunny and in the high-70s all day today.

2) Columbus Day: Today is Columbus Day. That means that and other government offices will be closed today. There is no mail delivery, either. But, rest assured, Woburn Police and will be on call as always. If you have an emergency, call 911.

3) Event spotlight: Duck Tape, candy corn and . Sign us up! Join the crafty folks at A.C. Moore this afternoon between 1 and 3 p.m. to learn how to make a candy corn treat cup out of colored duck tape. The event is free and you get to keep your cup!

 

4) In case you missed it: Although we don’t spend as much time in the kitchen as we’d like, we get to live vicariously through the Thoughtful Eats kitchen every Saturday. This week, Raquel Matos treated us to a delicious Dutch Apple Pie. What’s better than apples, pie and streusel on a cool fall day? Um, nothing! Read the recipe here.

 

5) Death of a Superman: On this day in 2004, actor Christopher Reeve, who portrayed Superman in four feature films, died of heart failure. Reeve, 52, had been paralyzed since a horse accident in 1995. In addition to playing the comic book hero, Reeve was known as a pioneer in supporting social causes, particularly spinal cord research. Despite his paralysis, he starred in a remake of Rear Window in 1999 and directed two movies before his death.
