Five Things You Need to Know Today, Oct. 13

Rain, rain, go away...

Here are five things you need to know today:

 

1) More dreariness: We’ll likely see some rain today, but, according to the National Weather Service, it should be over by 5 p.m. Just in time for soccer practice! Expect temperatures to stay in the 60s today.

2) Reminder: If you just moved to the city, or you have lived here and didn’t previously register to vote, you have until next Wednesday, Oct. 19 to register. If you make it before the Wednesday deadline, you will be eligible to vote in the Nov. 8 election.

3) Event spotlight: There will be a lot going on at on Saturday. During business hours, you can build a scarecrow or build a fairy garden. Mark your calendar!

 

4) In case you missed it: Antonio Matos of Boston was arraigned from his hospital bed in Lahey Clinic yesterday afternoon for charges related to the shooting of Officer Robert DeNapoli. Read all about the arraignment here.

 

5) A home fit for a president: On this day in 1792, the first cornerstone of the presidential home in the country’s capital city was laid. It wasn’t until 1800, though, that a president would call the “White House” home when President John Adams moved in. The 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home was constructed by Irish-American architect James Hoban. Later, during the War of 1812, the White House was set of fire. Hoban would return to guide the reconstruction and expansion of the presidential estate.
