5) Let’s (not) stay together: On this day in 1974, singer Al Green was attacked by an ex-girlfriend in his bathroom. Mary Woodson entered Green’s home, tossed scalding-hot grits on his back, then shot herself to death in his bedroom. The attack left Green, who had recently become a born-again Christian, shaken emotionally and hospitalized for months. When Green recovered, the singer became an ordained Baptist minister and preached at a Memphis church. He is still a preacher today, but after renouncing soul music for many years, began performing his hits again in the 80s.
