Five Things You Need to Know Today, Oct. 28

WMHS football is tonight!

Here are five things you need to know today:

1) Make hay while the sun shines: Despite yesterday’s cold, dreary weather, we’ll have sunshine today. Yay! Expect it to be just as chilly, though, as temperatures will likely stay in the 40s. If you’re still holding out on turning on your heat, you may change your mind.

2) Halloween parade: As we’re sure you already know—because you’re faithful Five Things readers—the will be held this Sunday at noon. Expect the streets to be lined with thousands of people for this grand All Hallow’s Eve bash. Route 38 will be closed in both directions all the way from the Winchester line to the Route 128 rotary between noon and 4 p.m.

3) Event spotlight: The Tanners football team will take on the Reading Rockets tonight at 7 p.m. As our Facebook friend Debbie said, “Dress up warm and cheer for our home team!”

4) In case you missed it: managed to quickly capture a house-break suspect due to his Nike sneakers. Using the sneaker tread patterns, police matched the sneakers to the crime.

5) Lady Liberty: On this day in 1886, President Grover Cleveland accepted the Statue of Liberty on behalf of the American public. The statue was a gift from France, in recognition of the French and American alliance during the Revolutionary War. The copper statue was sent to New York in 350 parts and reassembled Lady Liberty on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
