Large, Tasty Portions Abound at Ixtapa

Our Bites Nearby column takes a look at the tasty hot spot in Woburn Center.

Overview: Situated in the middle of Woburn's busy center, is a little escape. This local chain offers authentic Mexican cuisine in huge portions and affordable prices. And they don't skimp on taste or quality either. The food is always served hot, is super fresh and as one Ixtapa regular proclaimed, "I don't think Ixtapa even owns a can opener." Ixtapa is your stop for a good meal and a good deal in the heart of Woburn.

Decor: Keep your eyes peeled for Ixtapa as you drive through Woburn Center's rotary. You might miss the sign hidden behind the tree so look for the restaurant on the corner of Montvale Avenue and Main Street. Ixtapa's interior is filled with reds, yellows and browns and Mexican artwork are featured alongside flatscreen TVs so you can enjoy some culture while still watching the latest sports game. A large decorative bench at the entrance is a perfect place to sit while waiting for your party to arrive.

Appetizers: As soon as you sit down at your table, the friendly waiter brings over a hot basket filled with fried tortilla chips and some bowls of fresh homemade tomato salsa. If this isn't enough of an appetizer for you, try their nachos idaho (potatoes instead of tortillas) or their chile con queso. Or share a fiesta platter with a combination of several appetizing delights with your friends.

The Drinks: When you go to Ixtapa, it's imperative that you try one of their famous margaritas (served with or without alcohol). Their most popular one is El Presidente Margarita which features two types of tequlia and is served on the rocks with fresh lime juice. We also recommend a cold blended Strawberry Colada Margarita. You can pick and chose from various fruit flavors or their selection of eight different tequilas. If margaritas are not your thing, try a cold glass of their Modelo Especial beer. Ixtapa also has wine, juices and sodas on their beverage menu.

Entrees: You'll spend a lot of time poring over Ixtapa's huge selection of Mexican entrees trying to decide which of the various delights will win the prize of being your lunch or dinner. Ixtapa has soups, salads, quesadillas, burritos, chimichangas, sandwiches, burgers, fajitas, as well as steak, pork, chicken, seafood and vegetarian dishes and combos. Try the Chie Verde (pork cubes in a mild green sauce), their Enchiladas Mazaltan (enchiladas filled with seafood and vegetables) or their Sopa de Albondigas (a meatball soup with vegetables and served with tortillas).

Desserts: If your waistline can handle even more food, try one of Ixtapas luxurious desserts. They serve a delicious creamy flan, fried churros (long donuts with hot chocolate dipping sauce), Apple Burritos with a side of ice cream and Chimi-Cheesecake (a chimichanga-cheesecake fusion).

Service: Ixtapa is open for lunch and dinner with full service in their dining area and at the bar. They have kids and lunch specials, as well as coupons you can find online and in the local circular. On Wednesday evenings, a live Mariachi band will play some authentic Mexican music. They take requests and will stop by your table to serenade you.
