Letter to the Editor: An Update on the Middlesex Canal Restoration Project

Ward 6 Alderman Mike Raymond writes that Woburn Residents will be able to review and comment on the plan before its submission.

This letter was submitted to Woburn Patch by Ward 6 Alderman Mike Raymond:

One of the frequently asked questions I have received over the past few months prior to the election was: What is the status of the Middlesex Canal Restoration Project? The project was introduced to the residents of North Woburn at one of my first Neighborhood Meetings in February of 2008. In May of 2008 the Middlesex Canal Commission developed a concept study that I distributed to all of the residents who attended my neighborhood meetings. If you would like to receive an electronic copy of this plan please email me at; ward6alderman@yahoo.com

On October 15, 2010 I attended a meeting in the Mayor's office along with Planning Board Director Ed Tarallo, and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Middlesex Canal Commission Thomas Raphael for an update on the Canal. The Mayor appointed the point of contact for the City of Woburn as Mr. Tarallo. This step is a requirement of the federally funded Canal project. A walkway, bikeway and colonial bridges along the Canal is planned along with a proposed English Garden, trees and a fountain at Kiwanis Park. Kiwanis Park is a City park located at the corner of Alfred Street and Main Street (Route 38) in North Woburn. This site is located on the railroad bed alongside the Middlesex Canal stretching from School Street to Alfred Street in North Woburn. Funding for the Middlesex Canal Restoration Project will come from State and Federal programs.
