Nice Last Minute Mother's Day Gifts

Forget to get something for mom? Here's some tips for procrastinators.

Happy Mother’s Day!  If you don’t already have plans, a card, or a gift for your own mom or the mother of your children, well… you’re a little late at this point.  But it’s better late than never.

Here are some cheap ideas that can be pulled together at the last minute to show the mom in your life how much she is appreciated:

Let her sleep in.  Always a nice thought, but it’s especially considerate for new moms.  I can’t recall a day in the last year and a half when I have slept past 7am, and even that would be considered a luxury.  Dad, keep the kids entertained and away from mom (as tough as that is!) for those early morning hours, so she can get some much deserved rest.

Have a picnic in the park, if weather permits.  Bread, cheese, and fruit on a blanket is such a simple concept, and yet always seems indulgent and satisfying.  Any chance to stick my bare feet in green grass and watch my husband and son run around together is time well spent.

Head to your local supermarket.  Most of them have an end cap filled with gift cards to various stores in the area.  Skip over the Home Depot and Best Buy cards unless there’s something very specific in mind, and instead go for a local spa, book store, or clothing store.  And while you’re there pick up a bouquet of flowers and a simple card (if there are any left, Dilly-Dallyer!).  These are not the most imaginative ideas in the world, but practicality is never a bad thing in my book.

Hire a cleaning service to come in once a month.  Heck, even if they only came once ever I’d be grateful.  It’s spring cleaning time, and yet cleaning is the last thing on my mind.  Most of us would rather spend our precious free time outdoors with the ones we love, instead of dusting off base boards.  So pay someone else to do the dirty work.

If you’re busy on Mother’s Day traveling to the in-laws' house or to see your own parents, be sure to set aside time for the mom in your life you missed.  It doesn’t have to be on the actual day to be appreciated.  Just be sure she knows you’re thinking of her.

A very happy Happy Mother’s Day to all the dedicated, loving moms out there.  Whether you’re a new mom or a grandmother many times over, you should all be recognized for the joy you bring, advice you give, and your unconditional love that fuels a family.  Not just today, but every day.
