Updated: Tropical Storm Watch in Effect, Gov. Patrick Declares State of Emergency

The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Woburn and surrounding areas for this weekend.

As Sunday begins, we're ready for Hurricane Irene.

The National Weather Service issued a tropical storm watch for Woburn and surrounding areas in anticipation of Irene. Areas in southern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut are under hurricane watches. 

"Hurricane Irene has turned north and will move toward southern New England today," the NWS states. People in southern New England should prepare for periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall as well as the likelihood of coastal flooding.

"For those under a watch," the NWS continues, "now is the time to begin preparing your home or business according to your hurricane disaster plan. Listen for possible warning and be ready to evacuate if necessary."

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth in anticipation of the potential storms. 

"Governor Patrick has issued a state of emergency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at 12:35 p.m. effective immediately in preparation for Hurricane Irene," the alert from the governor's office states. "The National Weather Service has issued a Hurricane Watch for all of Coastal Massachusetts, a Tropical Storm Watch for Inland Massachusetts and a Flood Watch for the entire Commonwealth.
