Woburn's Version of 'The Great Race' For Dads, Children Thursday

The Be Well Woburn effort rolls on this Father's Day.

For Father’s Day this year, why not take your dad to all seven continents—without leaving Woburn—in about an hour?

The team has come up with a novel idea to get dads and children in kindergarten through grade 5 to spend time together and do something physical, nutritious and fun.

Woburn’s version of the Amazing Race—The Amazing Wellness Race—is the brainchild of , assistant school superintendent for curriculum and assessment.

People travel around the world to try new things, Reese explained Monday. The Be Well team wants people—especially kids—to try new things, Reese said, both activities and foods.

So teams of participants will get to visit seven continents and either try a food or activity from that continent, Reese explained.

Visitors to Antarctica, for example, will get the chance to try salmon, which, Reese said, many children have never sampled. If they like it, they can get a salmon recipe to take home.

In Australia, visitors can try rugby.

The plane fare to each destination:  a lap around the WMHS track.

The around-the-world excursion should take teams between an hour and an hour and a half, Reese said, including the lap around the track between visits to each continent. All the laps will total two miles, he said.

The program isn’t a race, Reese said. The goal is to finish the event.

While the event was conceived in conjunction with Father’s Day, other caregivers are welcome to take the trip with a child in grades K through 5, Reese said. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Woburn’s Amazing Wellness Race has been a real team effort to pull together, Reese said. The three main sponsors, he said, are , the New England Produce Council and . Between 15 and 20 volunteers will help teams the day of the event, he said.

The event will be held on Thursday, June 16. Signing-in starts at 6 p.m.; the race, at 6:30. The rain date would be the following Thursday, June 23.

To register, mail or drop off a registration form and check for $10 per family, payable to the City of Woburn, to the Woburn Recreation Department, 10 Common St. Registration forms are available on the Recreation Department web page. Questions?  Call Rory Lindstrom at 781-897-5805.
