Lexington Community Education presents: John Coltrane: His Life and Music - A Lecture and Recital featuring Joe Lovano on Saxophone and Pianist and Author Lewis Porter

A key figure in jazz, a pioneer in world music, and an intensely emotional force whose following continues to grow, John Coltrane (1926-1967) has become a musical inspiration for thousands of fans and musicians and a personal inspiration to as many more.  Tonight through performance and discussion we will celebrate the life and musical legacy of Coltrane with two of his finest champions.

Lewis Porter, Ph.D, is active as a jazz pianist, keyboardist and composer.  He has recorded three CDs. The critics have said that Porter is “A helluva piano player” (Jazz Times). “Mixing experimental with traditional, [he] plays up a storm.” (Midwest Record)  “Porter is a deep thinker.” (Swing Journal).  His music is “founded upon depth and cunning use of space”.

Grammy Award winning musician Joe Lovano, is both pioneer and preserver in/of the Jazz tradition. A Blue Note recording artist, Lovano has played with musicians including Elvin Jones, Carla Bley, Lee Konitz, Charlie Haden, and Bob Brookmeyer, Paul Motian,  Esperanza Spalding, Bill Frisell, Jim Hall, and John Scofield among others.
