Recent advances in the understanding of self-harm
Matthew Nock, PhD
Professor of Psychology, Harvard University
The question of why people intentionally behave in ways that are harmful to themselves has puzzled scholars for thousands of years. Unfortunately, self-harm continues to be a leading cause of death worldwide and many fundamental questions remain unanswered (e.g., Who engages in self-harm? Why do people hurt themselves? How can we better predict and prevent such behavior?). This presentation will describe recent advances in the understanding, assessment, and treatment of self-harm behaviors, as well as some of the most promising directions for future research on this devastating problem.
