Farmer's Market Goes To The Dogs

As summer nears its end, the city's is planning a last "Dog Days of Summer" event featuring... shelter dogs, hot dogs (of the eating variety) and a dog park. 

Although dogs are welcome at the Farmer's Market any time of the year, the Woburn Agricultural Commission is encouraging shoppers to bring their pups and learn about animal shelters this weekend.

"We are thrilled to have Northeast Animal Shelter at the Farmer’s Market, as many folks from Woburn and surrounding communities have adopted their pets from this wonderful organization," said Agricultural Commission member Paul Medeiros.

Representatives from the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem will be at the market between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday to answer questions about shelters and discuss pets that are up for adoption.

Donations—both monetary and "in-kind"—will also be accepted, said Medeiros.

Much-needed items at NEAS are:

• high-quality canned and dry dog and cat food;
• nylabone chew toys;
• kongs;
• gift cards to supermarkets;
• gift cards to pet supply stores;
• cloth towels; and
• blankets. 

Farmer's Market volunteers will also set up a small, enclosed dog park area for pups to play in, complete with a wading pool for pooches who might want to cool off.

Volunteers will also be serving up grilled hot dogs for a small fee.  

The is held between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sundays at Spence Farm, 41 Wyman St.
