Tanners Hope to Upend Top Seed for Division Final Berth

The Tanners travel to face Concord-Carlisle on Friday at 7 p.m.

It's been an exciting season for the Woburn High School football team, and the Tanners hope to make it last a bit longer as they play in the Northwest Division 3 semifinal game this weekend. Here are five things to get you ready for the playoff showdown.

1. Who, What, Where and When: Woburn travels to Concord-Carlisle on Friday night to take on the bracket's top seed. Kick off comes at 7 p.m. and the winner advances to the divisional final next week against either Melrose or Arlington.

2. How They Got Here: The Tanners put together their best defensive performance of the year last week in a 21-7 quarterfinal victory over Wakefield in the team's first playoff game since 2005. Concord-Carlisle, meanwhile, cruised to a 29-7 win over No. 8 Winchester.

3. Scouting the Patriots: Concord-Carlisle snagged a Dual County League Small Division regular season title with an overall record of 7-1 to go with a 3-1 league mark. So far this season, Concord-Carlisle has average 29 points per game on offense while allowing 20.8 points per contest.

4. Woburn's Semifinal Road: Leading up to last week's game, the Tanners had lost two in a row to difficult opponents in Arlington and Reading. But prior to that the team ripped off five straight wins to start the year. The Tanners are averaging 22 points per game this year while allowing 20.9 points on the defensive side of the ball.

5. Marvin the Man: Running back Marvin Jean has been a critical cog all season for the Tanners. Last week he scored all three touchdowns for Woburn during the team's win over Wakefield. He's among the talented offensive threats for the locals, along with quarterback Rob Voci and others.
