Boston Lobsters vs. Philadelphia Freedoms WTT Tennis

Last night Australians Mark Philippoussis and Sam Groth were featured in the Boston Lobsters/Philadelphia Freedoms match at the Joan Norton Tennis Center.

Last night was the first home match for new Boston Lobster Mark Philippoussis.  He was playing against his former team, the Philadelphia Freedom.  He did not wait long to make his presence felt.  His first opponent of the night was fellow Australian Sam Groth.  Mark and his big serve put the match away quickly, winning 5-2.

Victoria Duval defeated Lobster Jill Craybas 5-3 in women’s singles.

Philippoussis was back for men’s doubles with Lobsters’ double specialist Eric Butorac.   It was a close match against Sam Groth and Jordan Kerr.  With Philippoussis and Butorac coming out on top 5-4.

Philippoussis and Groth took on their toughest opponents of the night when 4 children picked from the stands came on the court at half time.  The kids were given 3 shots to try to return a serve.  They all succeeded.

Lady Lobsters Jill Craybas & Katalin Marosi defeated Victoria Duval & Liezel Huber in women’s doubles 5-3.  This gave the Lobsters a 18-14 lead going into the final set – mixed doubles.

Liezel Huber & Sam Groth beat Lobsters Katalin Marosi & Eric Butorac 5-3.  This made the score 21-19 in favor of the Lobsters but they hadn’t won yet.  One of the many great things about WTT tennis is that if the team that is behind going into the last set wins, the game goes into overtime.  The Freedom could win the match if they won the next 3 games.  All the Lobsters had to do was win one more game for the win.  Marosi & Butorac, with the crowd’s support, won the next game.  The Lobsters won 22-19.

Tonight the Lobsters take on the Washington Kastles.   It will be a fun night as Mark Philippoussis plays for the Lobsters and Martina Hingis plays for the Kastles.  League co-founder and tennis legend Billie Jean King will be in attendance.  The Lobsters will be honoring the 40th anniversary of her win against Bobby Riggs.  Tickets are still available.  For more information visit www.bostonlobsters.net.
