Boston Lobsters Aren’t Just for Eating

Did you know that Boston has a professional tennis team? They play World Team Tennis. The 2013 season is just around the corner. Meet this year's core team.

The Lobsters are Boston’s professional tennis team.   They play a 3 week season each July between Wimbledon and the US Open.  The atmosphere in the Joan Norton Tennis Center becomes electric as the crowd gets behind their favorite players.   Fans are encouraged to sport witty signs for their favorite players and come up with nicknames for the players and the team.   It was a fan that christened Lobsters fans "Crustacean Nation".

The core 2013 Boston Lobster team is:

Eric Butorac - Doubles specialist Eric Butorac is back for his 4th year with the Boston Lobsters.   He is ranked #4 among American men in doubles behind the Bryan Brothers and Scott Lipsky.  Eric has won 13 ATP tour doubles titles and this year has reached 3 doubles finals.   Eric has become a Lobster fan favorite.  When he’s on the court, cheers of Boooo-Teeee can be heard throughout the stadium.

Jill Craybas - At 38, Jill is one of the oldest players on the tour.  She has wins over Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters.  Jill has had a career high ranking of 39 in singles and 41 in doubles.  She represented the United States in the Beijing Olympics.  One of her mixed doubles partners is Lobster teammate Eric Butorac.   They look to recreate their magic on the Lobsters’ court at the Joan Norton Tennis Center this July.

Paola Suarez – Paola brought home a bronze medal for Argentina with doubles partner Patricia Tarabini in the Athens Olympics.  She has captured eight doubles Grand Slam titles (4 French Opens, 3 US Opens, 1 Australian Open) and won 39 WTA doubles titles overall.  Her career high ranking was #9.

Amir Weintraub – 26 year old Amir is Israel’s #2 ranked player behind Dudi Sela.  In December 2010, Amir played Sela for the Israeli Tennis Championship and beat him (7–6, 3–6, 7–6).  He has been playing in the Davis Cup for Israel since 2011.   This is Amir’s 2nd year playing WTT but first as a Boston Lobster.

Bud Schultz - Bud is entering his 5th year as coach of the Boston Lobsters.   He has coached Ivan Lendl, Pam Shriver and Greg Rusedski.  He coached new Lobster Jill Craybas early in her career and currently coaches Eric Butorac outside of the Lobsters.  He has guided the Lobsters to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2 of his 4 years.

The Lobsters play at the Joan Norton Tennis Center at the Manchester Athletic Club.  This year’s season runs from July 7th – July 22nd.  For more information about the Lobsters visit www.bostonlobsters.net.
