Obituary: Leo D. McHugh, Owned Flanders' Pool Hall

Leo D. McHugh of Woburn passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 24, at the Winchester Hospital. He was 86 years of age. Born in Woburn he was the son of the late Leo J. and Theresa (Doherty) McHugh. Leo was raised and educated in Woburn where he attended St. Charles School and graduated from Woburn High School with the class of 1945.

Leo began his working career at Sylvania Corp in Woburn, MA. Leo was also owner/operator of Flanders' Pool Hall in Woburn Center. Leo was a very skilled pool player and a recipient of many awards for his talents and achievements in the game of pool. He later became co-owner and operating manager of the Woburn Package Store "The Montvale Packy" on Montvale Ave just out of Woburn Center, where he worked with his business partner and cousin Jack Doherty for many years.

Leo was very involved in the Woburn community. He was a lifetime member of the Woburn Elks and the Towanda Club. Leo was involved in politics for many years and a proud member of the Democratic Party. Leo enjoyed playing cards, going to the horse race track, and traveling with his close group of friends. He had many fond memories of his trips to the Saratoga Race Track in New York, Las Vegas, Onset beach down the Cape, Old Orchard in Maine, and the Lakes region in New Hampshire.

Leo was a humble man of great faith and was an active member of St. Charles Church. He was devoted to his family and friends. Everyone always looked forward to spending time with Leo; he was a great guy with a big heart and the life of the party. Nothing gave him more joy than spending time with his family and friends. Leo was kind, thoughtful and loving to family, friends and anyone that had the pleasure to know him. He will be greatly missed by all.

In addition to his late parents, Leo is preceded in death by his sister Nancy McHugh and his cousins Agnes Salerno, Bertha "Buddy" Porter, Mike Porter, Rev. Charles McGahey, William Doherty, Ruth Connolly, Edmund "Neda" Doherty, Ernie Doherty, Robert Doherty, Daniel Doherty, Charles Doherty, Gene Doherty, and Thomas Doherty. Leo is survived by John "Jack" Doherty, Virginia Doherty, Kay McKittrick, Grace McArdle, Agnes Clark, Mary Thayer, Anne McHugh, and Mike McHugh.

Funeral services will be held from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Saturday, February 29th, at 9 a.m. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St., Woburn, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be held on Friday from 4 thru 8 p.m. Services will conclude with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Leo’s memory to the charity of your choice.
