To the Editor:

A big thank you to all of the dedicated volunteers who pitched in to make the Mayor’s Senior Red Sox Day, held Thursday, July 21 at the a huge success in spite of scorching temperatures that soared to more than 100 degrees. More than 350 Woburn seniors attended and enjoyed a barbecue, entertainment and raffle prizes.

Special thanks to Joanne Collins, director of the Woburn for teaming with Marie Lingblom in my office to pull together all of the event details.

Extra special thanks are in order for members of the Woburn Breakfast Lions Club and the Woburn Kiwanis Club for braving the extreme heat of the day and sizzling grills to cook and serve more than 400 hamburgers and hot dogs.

Breakfast Lions include Al Autenzio, Kevin O’Rourke, Robert Black, John Marlow, Tucker Quinn, and Jay Umanzio.  Kiwanis members include President Gene Nagle, Jim DeLong, Ken Schultz, David Ryan, Larry Byron, Ralph Galen, and Bob Lento.

Thanks to Patty Meehan, COA transportation coordinator, and all of her van drivers for coordinating the pickup and delivery of event supplies. Thanks also to members of the Woburn Middlesex Lions Club, including MaryAnn Chorlton, president, and Mary O’Connor (along her husband Charlie O’Connor) for their help with the event, as well as teen helpers including Rebecca Russo, Paige Tonra, Nick Collella, Kelly Valletta, Matt Dee, Ryanne Newhouse, Sophie Serna, Ryan Tonra, and Chritiana Contrad.  Thanks also to Jeanne Lingblom for her help checking in guests.

Joan’s cousin, Dorothy Capone, raised $2,174 to benefit Friends Helping Seniors and the group’s Senior Center programs.

Thanks also to Debbie Russell, who once again brought gifts and greetings from the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park, where she works each summer, and toGreg Curtis for providing the entertainment, including “The Phantom of Fenway Park.”

Thanks also the Department of Public Works, Woburn Fire and Woburn Police departments for providing safety support during this year’s event.

And, as always, thanks to Richard Jaime and the Sons of Italy for being such gracious hosts.  See you next year!

Sincerely,
Scott D. Galvin

Senior Thanks City For Heat Wave Help

It is worth noting that during [this summer's] terrible hot spell, the
seniors were fortunate to have the Senior Center open late to go to.  Joanne Collins was there to see to it that they were comfortable. It is  also worth noting that the Woburn Housing Authority was great and made sure that all their tenants were well, thanks to Director Bob McNabb and Manager George Sutton. Tom Maher and all his maintenance men stayed until midnight to look after the
tenants and kept checking on them to be sure they were OK.

So a big thank you for all the caring people of our great city that cared enough to be available for all of us. We are lucky. Thank you!
