A Woburn Police officer rescued a small girl and her father from the waters of Sunday night.
At 5:57 p.m., Officers Dana Gately and Mark O'Hearn and Detective Brian McManus responded to Horn Pond after a kayak flipped over in the water. A 35-year-old Saugus man and his 5-year-old daughter were in the water, calling for help approximately 20 yards from the shore line.
Officer Gately removed his firearm belt and bulletproof vest and entered the water. He tossed a rope to the man, to keep contact with him, and made his way further into the water.
Officer Gately reached the little girl, who was wearing a life jacket, picked her up and carried her to Detective McManus, who brought her to shore. Both Officer Gately and Detective McManus assisted the father to land, as well.
Reading Fire and EMS checked the man and the little girl, who were not injured.
