Officer Gately removed his firearm belt and bulletproof vest and entered the water. He tossed a rope to the man, to keep contact with him, and made his way further into the water.

Officer Gately reached the little girl, who was wearing a life jacket, picked her up and carried her to Detective McManus, who brought her to shore. Both Officer Gately and Detective McManus assisted the father to land, as well.
