Man Airlifted After Industrial Explosion Burns 90 Percent of Body

Two workers were hospitalized, one with significant burns following the Wildwood Ave. incident.

Two workers were transported to area hospitals after an industrial explosion on Wildwood Ave. Tuesday afternoon. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Woburn Fire Captain Tim Ring said at the scene that one man was taken to a Boston hospital by medical helicopter with burns on approximately 90 percent of his body. The man was conscious and talking to paramedics as he was loaded into the helicopter, according to Ring.

A second man was taken to Lahey Clinic by ambulance after he attempted to assist following the explosion. He did not suffer burns, and Ring said it is unclear exactly what injuries he suffered.

The explosion took place at a company called Powder Parts. Initial reports came in that the explosion had occurred at Levant Power, but according to a representative at that company the incident took place at Powder Parts, which leases the other portion of the building from Cummings Properties.

Several units were on scene following the explosion. The State Police and State Fire Marshal’s Office are leading the investigation along with Woburn Police, Woburn Fire, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and others.

Ring said it is too soon to say whether the burns suffered by the worker are life-threatening.

“Our thoughts are with him, and hopefully everything will work out OK for him,” said Ring.
