State Police Helicopters Help Search for Remains of Melanie Melanson

The Air Wing is said to be helping with photos of an excavation in the renewed search for Melanie Melanson's remains.

UPDATED 6:53 p.m.:

Three helicopters have been flying overhead in the area by the Kraft plant this afternoon, as the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing reportedly is helping to take photos of an excavation in the renewed search for Melanie Melanson, a 14-year old girl who vanished 23 years ago.

Mary Beth Long of the Middlesex County District Attorney's office confirmed to Patch this evening that "an evidentiary search" was taking place.

A private investigator Alan Tate and some volunteers renewed the search for the missing Melanson last summer, hoping to find new evidence.

Melanson went missing in 1989, after attending a party in the woods with a group of friends. Melanie was last seen with two boys, who have maintained for 23 years that they have no knowledge of what happened to the teenager.

Authorities are still searching for Melanie or any information related to the case. Members of the public with information that they believe would be helpful to the investigation can contact the Woburn Police Department at 781-933-1212 x853 or State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office at 781-897-6650.
