UPDATE, 4:45 p.m.: Moments ago, Salem Police tweeted asking drivers to avoid the Shadow Lake Road intersection as it will be partially closed and obstructed for the next four to six hours as they investigate the crash.
UPDATE, 4:30 p.m.: Salem Fire Capt. Stephane Cattin said two adult male patients were injured in the accident with one suffering "life-threatening, very serious injuries."
Cattin said the call for the accident came in at 2:39 p.m. On scene, Cattin said the drivers of the two vehicles, the PT Cruiser and the Dodge pickup, were the only occupants of their vehicles.
There was no entrapment and Cattin said both drivers were able to be extricated from their cars through normal manpower.
Salem Fire transported both patients to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass. Cattin said the driver of the pickup was being treated there for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the PT cruiser, whom Cattin described as an older male, suffered "life-threatening, very serious injuries" to his head and chest.
From Holy Family, Cattin said the man was med-flighted to a Boston hospital. Cattin did not know to which hospital the man was taken.
EARLIER STORY: First responders are on the scene of a two-vehicle accident for which a med-flight has been called, according to emergency reports.
The accident on North Broadway involves two patients. It occurred shortly before 3 p.m.
Salem police officers are conducting a technical accident reconstruction investigation, as of 3:30 p.m., and motorists should expect some minor delays in the vicinity of Shadow Lake Road at Route 28.
A beige PT Cruiser with Massachusetts license plates had heavy damage to its passenger side. The second vehicle, a blue Dodge pickup truck with New Hampshire plates, had front-end damage.
The entrance to Shadow Lake Road from Route 28 is temporarily closed. Drivers proceeding down Shadow Lake Road are being directed through the parking lot of the nearby Hess convenience store and gas station.
One lane of Route 28 south is temporarily closed due to the accident and investigation.
