A Winthrop man was arrested Thursday by the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force just hours after he allegedly attempted to rob at least two banks in the area, including one in Woburn.

According to Wakefield Police, Winthrop resident Dennis Stack, 40, was arrested on Thursday night in Malden.

Police allege that Stack walked into a bank on Main Street in Wakefield around noon on Thursday and demanded cash while making mention of a weapon. Police said that Stack left the bank with no money.

Then early Thursday afternoon, Stack allegedly robbed Citizens Bank on Main Street in Woburn, fleeing on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.

The Citizens Bank inside Stop 'n Shop was robbed later Thursday afternoon, but according to Woburn Police, Stack has not been charged with that incident. He is, however, believed to be responsible for Woburn's downtown robbery, according to police.

According to scanner reports as the string of robberies unfolded, it didn't take police long to suspect Stack of the robberies. Within an hour of the Wakefield incident, Stack's name surfaced as a suspect after his vehicle was spotted at the scene of the first robbery.
