Woman, 19, 'Scammed' on Internet

The young Barrington woman made contact with someone on a legitimate website for babysitters, nannies and other caregivers and ended up losing more than $3,000.

A young Barrington woman appears to have been "scammed" out of more than $3,000 by someone who used a legitimate babysitting and caregiver website to make contact with her.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross reported on Monday, Dec. 3, that a Whipple Avenue woman, 19, contacted a woman in Arizona after joining the website, care.com, which connects people to babysitters, nannies, au pairs and other child and senior caregivers.

The woman reportedly told the Barrington woman that she was moving from Arizona to Rhode Island with a son who needed an electronic wheelchair when they arrived, said LaCross.

The Arizona woman mailed a $3,200 check to the Barrington woman, who deposited it in her Bank of America account after agreeing to purchase the wheelchair. A day later, the Arizona woman called the local woman and said she had changed her mind about the purchase.

She also gave the Barrington woman instructions to return the funds by sending a Moneygram to an address in Iowa. The Barrington woman apparently did not realize that the initial check had not cleared before she returned the cash even though the deposit appeared to show up in her account, said LaCross.

When she checked her account a few days later, it showed little or no money in it, said the police chief. “She apparently is the victim of an Internet scam,” said LaCross.

The Barrington woman and her father reported the incident to police on Monday, Nov. 26.

Oh no!! The Better Business Bureau recommends the consumer contact care.com to discuss this and how she was victimized.
