WPD Assist State Police With Stoneham Search

After leading area police departments on a search through the woods in Stoneham, a Salem man was arrested early Wednesday morning in the area of Route 93 southbound near the Route 128 northbound ramp, according to a State Police spokesperson.

Jonathan Torres, 31, of Salem, faces several charges, including operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license, subsequent offense, receving stolen vehicle, refusing to stop for police and possession of burglary instruments, according to the spokesperson.

Torres was expected to be arraigned in Woburn District Court on Wednesday, according to the spokesperson.

After spotting a gray Honda Accord in the breakdown lane with its lights off and in a hazardous location at about 1:30 a.m., a state trooper activated his lights and pulled in behind the vehicle on Route 128 northbound, according to the spokesperson. A black man, later identified as Torres, allegedly fled the vehicle, ran toward the Route 93 southbound on-ramp from Route 128 and hopped a guardrail and ran into heavy brush, according to the spokesperson.

, Woburn Police, State Police and a K9 unit teamed up to look for the suspect, searching the woodline and marsh area located between BJ's Wholesale Club and the highway. After roughly an hour, officers tracked Torres down in the woods after allegedly hearing him complaining about an injury he sustained to his left eye while running in the woods.

Torres allegedly stopped trying to evade the police so he could receive medical treatment for his bloodied left eye, according to the spokesperson. After taking Torres into custody, officers claimed they smelled a heavy odor of alcohol on the suspect, who also was said to have slurred speech. Torres was taken to Beverly Hospital.

During their investigation, State Police confirmed that the Honda Accord was a stolen vehicle out of Lowell, according to the spokesperson. Investigators also discovered damage done to the ignition and steering column, added the spokesperson.
