City Council Expected to Approve Middle School Roofs Appropriation

The board will vote tonight on the $5.7 million project.

Update, Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.: The Massachusetts School Building Authority's green roof repairs program is reimbursing the city for 51 percent of the Kennedy project and 25.6 percent of the Joyce. These percentages were approved on March 3 by the MSBA.

Tuesday, 2 p.m.: The City Council's Committee on Finance recommended that the board approve a at both middle schools at its meeting tonight.

The projects would cost $1.8 million at the , and include the roof, and $3.9 at the .

"There is no question these two roofs need to be replaced," said Alderman Ray Drapeau, who serves as chairman to the council's finance committee. 

City officials, as well as representatives from architects Gale & Associates, agree the two projects need to be put out to bid as quickly as possible so that the work is completed in a timely manner.

Alderman Richard Gately said he wants the city to maintain the new roofs.

"These are going to have to be maintained; we can’t keep putting roofs on these buildings," he said Monday. "There has to be a maintenance program. Drains have to be cleaned, anything that goes wrong has to be reported.

"Let's get it done and let’s get it done right," he added. "Let’s protect our investment… We can’t afford [not to]."

The City Council is expected to take a final vote on the appropriation tonight at its at .
