Dense Fog Reroutes County Ballot Delivery [Video]

The fog forces helicopters carrying ballots from desert precincts to land at the Puente Hills Mall.

Dense fog over the Los Angeles area Tuesday night delayed delivery of some ballots to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's headquarters in Norwalk.

That is likely also to mean a brief delay in reported results.

The fog forced helicopters carrying ballots to land at the Puente Hills Mall in the City of Industry--about a 25 minute drive from Norwalk.

Sheriffs' vehicles were then used to drive the ballots from the mall to Norwalk.

Most County ballots already arrive this way, but helicopters usually carry returns from Lancaster and Palmdale.

Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan told Patch that he expected "all precincts to be accounted for by the end of the night."

He also said delays are routine, and rarely affect final preliminary tallies by more than an hour or so.

Workers were also awaiting ballots from at least one Catalina Island precinct, scheduled to arrive in Long Beach by boat.

A final certified vote will not be available for 28 days, after all provisional ballots and other possible irregularities are resolved.

Many are expecting a high number of provisional ballots across the county with the rise of online registration.

Dean Logan explains how the County will handle provisional ballots and election certification in the video above.
