Mayor Galvin Challenges Flaherty to Series of Debates

Woburn Mayor Scott Galvin has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged candidate John Flaherty to a series of three debates.

Galvin announced the invitation on his Facebook page this past Sunday.

Flaherty, a well known local businessman and the man behind the funding of the Veterans' Memorial on the city commons, announced his candidacy this past March

In his Facebook post, Galvin took umbrage with claims apparently made in a mailer by Flaherty. Woburn Patch has not seen the mailer.

"Mr. Flaherty: I found your most recent mailer to be highly misleading," Galvin wrote. "As you know, and the records are clear I have never hired a family member to work for the City. In addition, those hires that you mention are specifically to replace retirees."

Galvin said he is "offering [Flaherty] the opportunity to debate these and any other issues for the benefit of the residents of Woburn.

"I am available any time," he stated.

Galvin said he suggests three dates ranges for debates before the primary.

The first date range he suggested was between August 26 and 29th. The second was between September 3rd  and 6th and his third suggestions was for between September 9th and the 13th.

"Let's work together to ensure citizens of Woburn are informed about the issues and where we both stand," he stated.

Woburn Patch will follow-up with Flaherty to inquire on his interest in meeting the mayor for debates and the mailer the mayor spoke of in his post.
