Summer isn’t too far away. You wouldn’t know it by today's temperature, but we’ll soon need a way to cool off.

Mayor Scott Galvin is proposing a splash park at Leland Park. The plan, which will go before the City Council on Tuesday night, includes $1.3 million to pay costs for ground remediation at Leland Park and construction of the splash park.

Galvin got help in the planning from Girl Scout Troop 1545, which is performing merit badge work in helping with the new sprinkler park plan.

On his Facebook page, Mayor Galvin also thanked Recreation Director Rory Lindstrom and City Engineer Greg Rheaume for leading a recent meeting with the Girl Scouts in Galvin’s office.

"It was a productive and fun meeting that helped move our plans for the grant-funded sprinkler park closer to reality. Nice work!” wrote the mayor.

Wait a minute! Was the dump site clean up at Leland? I know the city had five years to clean up the site, which is why the city could not build a school on that site, but I never read that the site was cleaned up. If the site was cleaned when was it and how much did it cost? anyone?

Pat the 1.3 millon price tag includes the cost of mitigating the site which has not taken place yet. I remember when they were talking about putting a school there in 2009 the numbers were 400,000-500,000 to do the clean up. They held off because the cost could have been as much as 2M if the contamination was pervasive.

Cleanup at Leland is scheduled for this spring

I think any talk of splash park should wait until the site is clean up and deemed safe. Who know what they will find once clean up has started.
