Primary Election Day in Full Swing

Candidates and supporters alike are basking in the sunshine on Tuesday as polls are open for Woburn’s municipal primary election.

Outside of Goodyear Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon was a host of supporters, in addition to a pair of the candidates on the ballot for Ward 5 alderman.

“So far, it’s been a great turnout and it’s a perfect day for it,” said Paul Muise Jr., who is hoping to keep his election hopes alive as one of three Ward 5 alderman candidates. “It’s good to see everyone coming out, doing their job and voting. Supporting the community, getting involved and speaking up for themselves and others is the most important thing.”

Also holding signs outside the school on Tuesday afternoon was incumbent candidate Darlene Mercer-Bruen, who echoed her competitor’s sentiments.

“We’re very lucky we can have the process and people can weigh all the issues, meet all the candidates and see what different ideas might get brought to the table,” said Mercer-Bruen. “I think I’ve been doing a fabulous job for Ward 5 and if the voters think that, they’ll come out and tell me that today. That’s what it’s all about. We’re a democracy and everyone should have choices.”

Polls are open until 8 p.m. as the only two races on the ballot are for Ward 5 alderman and the mayoral race between incumbent Scott Galvin and challengers Patrick Natale and John Flaherty.

Each race will only have two candidates by the end of the day. Check back with Woburn Patch to find out the results after polls close.
