Primary to Trim Mayoral and Ward 5 Candidates to Two on Tuesday

There are contested races in the mayoral and Ward 5 alderman race.

Voters will whittle a pair of contested races down on Tuesday as residents hit the polls for the Woburn municipal primary.

There are currently three candidates in the mayoral and Ward 5 alderman races, but when Tuesday is over, just two will remain in each.

Incumbent Scott Galvin faces off against challengers John Flaherty and Patrick Natale on the ballot in the mayoral race. In Ward 5, Paul Muise Jr. and James Fletcher are hoping to unseat incumbent Darlene Mercer-Bruen.

According to City Clerk William Campbell, about 8,000 people are expected to come out to the polls on Tuesday, a total of about 33 percent of the city’s 24,000 residents. Campbell said that is about the average turnout for a primary with a contested mayoral race.

There are no changes at the polling places, which are open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Campbell said he does not expect voters to have to deal with lines, but said residents should avoid the 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m. rush if possible.

“I expect the turnout to be high, but not unusually high,” said Campbell. “When the top seat is contested, you get a bit of an increased turnout.”
