Multiple Tanner Teams Jockeying for First Place

Woburn is excelling throughout the winter months.

The winter sports season is in full swing, and several Woburn Memorial High School teams sit at or near first place in their respective standings.

Woburn's girls basketball team has come streaking out of the gates. The Lady Tanners are 8-0 overall and 6-0 in Middlesex League play. Their record is good for a comfortable lead in the Liberty Division over second place Arlington, which is 4-4 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Also on the hardwood, Woburn is perched atop the boys basketball standings. The Tanners are 6-2 overall and 4-1 in Middlesex League play. Belmont is in second place with a 5-2 overall record and a 4-1 league mark.

On the ice, Woburn is a girls hockey state title contender. The Lady Tanners are 7-1 overall and 5-1 in league play. That puts them second in the Middlesex League behind Reading, which is 6-0 in league play and 6-1-2 overall.

ESPNBoston.com ranked Woburn No. 1 in the state last week, though that could change this week after Winchester handed the locals their first loss of the year with a 1-0 decision on January 4, a day after the rankings came out. Neither of Woburn's basketball teams have cracked the Top 25 yet despite their strong records.

The Woburn track and field teams are also performing well so far this season, which the wrestling team has several wins as well. The Tanner boys hockey team is in the middle of the pack with a 2-4-1 record in a highly competitive Middlesex League. Woburn still has plenty of time to make a playoff push.
