D1 Trojans Settle the Score   September 29,2013

The dense morning fog lifted from the Reading High School just in time for the host Rockets to get a good look at the boys who would ground any hopes of a Rocket launch this day.  Sunday, September 29th is a date that has been circled on the calendars of the entire D1 Trojan coaching staff.  The Reading Rockets eliminated the Trojans from the playoffs last November.  The game was hotly contested, to say the least…
Trojan Colin Harkins corralled the opening kick on the Woburn 40 and advanced it out to the 43.  Woburn RB Kris Chiary ran right on first down, found a hole, and burst forward to the Reading 41, a nice gain of 16.  The next four downs saw the Reading defensive line shut down the Woburn ground assault.  Reading would take over on downs on their own 35 yard line.
With last year’s game fresh in their minds, Head Coach John Ferrone and Defensive Coordinator Tony Giglio had their defense ready to rumble. 1st down saw the Rocket RB swarmed by the entire defensive line for no gain.  2nd and 3rd downs saw LBs Dylan Thompson and Riley Duran both make tackles for losses.  Reading would punt on fourth down.  Line Coaches John Lafferty and Mike Morgan had their lines ready .  Linemen Matt Qualey, Jake Daniell, Rennie Cyprian, Jack MacDonald, Dylan Zolubos, Angel Apaza, Sean Lafferty, Tyler Farren, Alex Fishlin, Matt McCabe and Tim Freeley would all combine to abort any sort of Rocket attack.
Woburn took possession on the Reading 48 yard line.  RB Dylan Thompson carried up the middle on 1st and 2nd downs, gaining 3 and 7 yards, and a Trojan first down.  Woburn’s offensive line held off the Reading D, solid blocking from Qualey, Harkins, Daniell, Farren, Will Mahoney, Seamus McCaffrey, Zolubos, Evan Vienneau, Freeley, Robert Lafferty, Jaden Russell, Killian Hayes, Owen Cyret Tucker Hogeland and Matt McCabe would provide plenty of protection this day.  1st and 10 from the Reading 38, Riley Duran plunged forward for a gain of 9.  Chairy would then gain two yards and a first down for Woburn. That carry ended the first quarter.
The second quarter opened with Woburn on the Reading 25 yard line, 1st and 10.  QB Cash Kingstad pitched to Duran who was running left.  Duran stopped and threw a strike to a wide open Chiary for a 25 yard touchdown.  The Trojan conversion attempt failed, Woburn led 6-0.
Duran kicked off to the Reading 40.  The Rocket return man got blasted by Chiary on the 46.  Thompson and Zolubos would both record solo tackles after short gains, Reading faced 3rd and 7.  An incomplete pass led to another Reading punt.  Woburn would start from their own 34.
Short carries from Robert Lafferty, Zolubos, Svelty and Duran saw  Woburn turn it over quickly.  Reading took over on the Woburn 37 yard line.  Two short carries had the Rockets at 3rd and 3 on the 30.  A big 3rd down tackle by Rennie Cyprian left them at 4th and 3.  Defensive line pressure forced the Rocket QB to lob the ball desperately to avoid a sack.  The ill advised throw found Cash Kingstad, who intercepted the ball in his tracks.
Woburn took over on their own 30 yard line.  The first down reverse was played perfectly by the Reading defensive end, he dropped Chiary for an 8 yard loss. The Trojans faced 2nd and 18 from the 22 yd line.  Duran took the hand off and ran left.  He saw a hole and cut back.  Duran would not be caught.  Riley cruised in for a long 78 yard touchdown.  Another failed conversion left the Trojans up 12-0, with :55 left in the first half.
Woburn kicked to the Reading 30, the return brought it out to the 42.  Matt Qualey got around the corner on first down and chased the QB into the waiting arms of Dylan Thompson, who recorded the 6 yard sack.  Combined tackles from Thompson, Qualey, Apaza and Harkins would shut down the Rockets and the first half.
The second half opened with Duran kicking to the reading 37, and Svelty stuffing any return bid.  Reading would punt on 4th and 9.  Duran took the punt on the Woburn 44 and returned it 31 yards before being caught on the Reading 23 yard line.  A series of short runs found the Trojans knocking on the door again, 1st and goal from the 6 yard line.  Kingsatd carried on two consecutive downs, getting the Trojans down to the 1 yard line.  After no gain, Woburn faced 4th and goal. The offensive line jumped and they now faced 4th and goal from the 6.  Kingstad’s pass sailed incomplete and Reading took over on the 6 as the quarter closed.
A quick 4 and out to open the 4th for Reading gave Woburn the ball on the Reading 31.  Three strong runs by Duran put Woburn on the 14 yard line, 1st and 10.  Thompson trucked it up the middle to the 8 yard line, then Duran dove to the 4.  After 2 short carries it was 4th and inches.  Offensive Coordinator Ryan Ferrone called Duran’s number again.  Riley dove in behind the left side of the line, breaking the plain of the goal line., Woburn led 18-0.  Chiary drilled the 2 pt conversion and Woburn was in control, 20-0.
Reading took over on their own 40 with 2:21 remaining, looking to get their stagnant offense off the launch pad.  A 7 yd QB keeper was stopped by Svelty, who combined with Alex Fishlin to provide strong safety play all day.  On 2nd and 3 the Rockets QB rolled out.  He hit his uncovered receiver in stride.  The receiver broke to mid field tackles and rolled in for the score.  Woburn would lead 20-6 after the failed conversion.
The game threatened to tighten a bit.  Reading executed a perfect onside kick.  Woburn returners seemed to back off a bit and a Rocket gunner swooped in and began tearing to the end zone.  A touchdown saving, diving tackle by Colin Harkins stopped him on the 36.  Three more tackles by Zolubos, Qualey and Cyprian would close the game out, Woburn winning 20-6. On the sideline supporting his teammates was injured player Eyan Russell.  Also cheering on the Trojans were the beautiful D1 cheerleaders.
The Woburn Police Superior Officers, Local 528, Trojans will play host to West Lynn next Sunday, 9:30 am at Woburn Memorial High School.
