D1 Trojans Bounce Burlington

The D1 Trojans, sponsored by the Woburn Superior Officers, Local 528, took their show on the road this week, visiting a struggling D2 squad in Burlington.  This contest was out of reach early, as most games have been for Head Coach John Ferrone’s group of warriors.   The game started with the Trojans (6-0 record coming in) kicking off.  Riley Duran drilled the opening kick down to the Burlington 18 yard line, there would be no return attempt.  Burlington tried to establish their ground game from the out set.  On first down they tried running to the right.  Defensive End Matt Qualey shut that attempt down deep in the back field for a loss of four yards.    They tried to run up the middle on 2nd and 14, middle linebacker Dylan Thompson slammed that door shut on them for no gain.  So, they ran left on 3rd and 14, figuring that must be the weak spot.  No luck, Eyan Russell broke through and stuffed the carrier.  Burlington punted on 4th and 14 from their own 15 yard line.  Riley Duran fielded the punt on the Burlington 29 yard line and he returned down to the Burlington 18 yard line.    Duran continues to run with a unique balance of power, speed and dexterity.  He took the first down hand off from QB Cash Kingstad and broke to the left.  The offensive line sealed off the defense and Duran ran in for a quick score.  There was a holding penalty on Woburn on the play, and Riley’s run was called back.  Woburn then faced 1st and 20 from the 28 yard line.  Line coaches John Lafferty and Mike Morgan saw their line blow open a huge hole on the right side.  RB Kris Chiary waltzed into the end zone, putting Woburn up 6-0 very early on.  Duran made the conversion kick and the Trojans were up, 8-0.   Woburn’s kickoff was fielded at the 40 yard line and returned to the Burlington 47.  Burlington ran left on first down for no gain, Kingstad and Dylan Zolubos combined on the stop.  Burlington’s QB fumbled the second down hand off.  The Woburn defender at the right place at the right time, as he seemingly has been all season, was Dylan Thompson.  He swallowed the ball up on the 46.  Woburn would give the ball right back to Burlington after a botched hand off of their own.  Burlington recovered on the 50 yard line.   First down saw Matt Qualey, again, get around the end of the line.  Qualey chased the running back straight into the waiting arms of Thompson for a loss of two yards.  Second and 12 saw another fumbled handoff.  The loose ball was pounced on by Thompson, yet again.  Woburn took over possession on the Burlington 46 yard line.  Running back Gage Svelty carried up the middle for a gain of five yards.  Second and five saw Zolubos go up the middle for a gain of seven more yards.  Svelty carried again for four yards.  As the first quarter closed Robert Lafferty stormed up the middle for ten tough yards.   The second quarter opened with the Trojans facing 1st and 10 from the 20 yd line.  Offensive Coordinator Ryan Ferrone called for an end-around.  Tight End Will Mahoney came off the right end and took the handoff from Alex Fishlin.  Mahoney sprinted left behind a strong offensive line.  He gained the corner, broke two tackles and staggered in over the pylon, putting Woburn up 14-0.  Zolubos ran in the extra point and Woburn led 15-0.   Burlington opened their next drive on their own 48.  The Woburn defensive line set to work.  Matt Qualey, Jake Daniell, Eyan Russell, Rennie Cyprian, Jack MacDonald, Tim Freeley, Matt McCabe, Sean Lafferty and Angel Apaza all helped to shut down any Burlington attack.  A series of short runs and penalties left the Burlington drive stalled out.  They would turn the ball over on downs on the 50 yard line.    Woburn was 1st and 10  from midfield.  Riley Duran took the snap from the shot gun.  The call was a QB keeper.  Duran streaked through the line.  He used a beautiful spin move to elude two linebackers.  He was now in the defensive backfield, charging at a defensive back.  As the defender braced to make the hit, Duran employed the spin again, leaving the cornerback, and everyone else,  behind.  Duran would score and put Woburn ahead 21-0.   Burlington would go four and out on their next possession, thanks in part to a huge hit from Eyan Russell on second and long. The Trojans took over on the 50 yard line again.  This series saw Zolubos take advantage of great blocking by his entire line.  Qualey, Tyler Farren, Daniell, Eyan Russell, Jaden Russell, Seamus McCaffrey, Rennie Cyprian Colin Harkins, Will Mahoney, Killian Hayes, Evan Vienneau, Owen Cypret, Tucker Hogeland and Sean Lafferty all held their blocks.  Zolubos carried for 8 and 23 yards on first and second downs..  1st and 10 from the 19 saw Coach Ferrone call for a little misdirection.  Zolubos cut across the formation to his right and cruised in for a long TD.  The conversion fell incomplete and Woburn went into halftime leading comfortably, 27-0.   As has been the case all season, second half opened with Coach Ferrone reigning in his offene, choosing to pound the ball up the middle the rest of the way.  A steady march straight down field, between the hash marks, ended with another Duran TD run.  This was a seven yard score.   The lopsided game gave several players a chance to try new positions.  Linemen Qualey, Cyprian, MacDonald and Sean Lafferty each got a turn carrying the ball.  A defensive shake up saw Ty Farren repeatedly getting into the Burlington backfield.  Farren was in on two tackles  and recorded a sack.  Defensive Coordinator Tony Giglio’s boys would preserve another shut out.    The D1 Trojans, now 7-0, are scheduled to close out their regular season this Sunday in Wilmington.  The Trojan-Wildcat game kicks off at 9:30.
