D1 Trojans Roll On
The D1 Woburn Trojans, sponsored by the Woburn Police Superior Officers, Local 528, played host to the Wakefield Warriors this past Sunday morning at Woburn Memorial High School.  Head Coach John Ferrone’s boys were looking to build on their strong effort in all three phases of the game last week vs. Watertown.
The game opened with Riley Duran returning the kickoff up to the Wakefield 43 yard line.  The Trojan offense went right to work.  Both first and second down saw Woburn ball carriers stopped for short losses.  Sticking with the run, Offensive Coordinator Ryan Ferrone called for another hand off on third down.  RB Kris Chiary started left but was bottled up, he bounced to right and saw daylight.  He broke through the line and rambled to the Warriors 18 yd line, a big gain of 27 yards.  Now first and ten, QB Cash Kingstad dished the ball to RB Riley Duran.  Duran broke hard to the left, stopped short and let it fly.  The southpaw found Chiary wide open in the end zone.  After a failed extra point attempt, the Trojans had an early 6-0 lead.
The Warriors first possession would start on their own 48 yard line.  Defensive End blew up the Warriors first play from scrimmage, breaking in asnd dropping the ball carrier for a one yard loss.  A quick ten yard completion and a three yard QB keeper found Watertown on Woburn’s 39 yard line.  Three straight runs up the middle put the Warriors on the Trojan 27 yard line, 1st & 10.  One incomplete pass and three runs for losses, solo tackles by Colin Harkins, Qualey, and Duran, and Woburn would take over on downs on their own 28.
First down saw Duran break a huge run down the left sideline line.  The gain was called back due to an illegal blocking penalty.  Woburn was backed up to their own 23, 2nd & 15.  RB Dylan Thompson streaked through the line for a big gain of 31 yds. The offensive line was starting to open big holes, lineman Jake Daniell, Jack MacDonald, Matt Qualey, Seamus McCaffrey, Jaden Russell, Ty Farren, Killian Hayes, Owen Cyret, Tucker Hogeland and Will Mahoney all contributed to the running attack.  Duran followed Thompson’s run with a 22 yard dash of his own.  It was then first and ten from the Wakefield 26 yard line.  Chiary joined the fun again.  He spun away from to would be tacklers and galloped 25 yards, getting hauled down on the Wakefield 1 yard line.  Thompson put his head down and blasted throught the Wakefield line for the 1 yard TD.   Duran kicked the 2 point conversion and Woburn led 14-0.
Wakefield’s offense wouldn’t fare any better on their second possession.  Their running game continued to be stacked up by the Trojan defensive line.  Among others clogging things up for them were Rennie Cyprian, Angel Apaza, Sean Lafferty, Tim Freeley and Matt McCabe.  Backed up on 4th and 11, the Warrior QB rolled out to pass.  His pass was picked off by ball hawk, Dylan Thompson and returned down to the Wakefield 7 yard line.  After a short gain each by Robert Lafferty  and Dylan Zolubos, Woburn faced 3rd & goal from the 6.  An offside call pushed them back to 3rd and 11.  QB Alex Fishlin tried to find TE Will Mahoney in the corner of the end zone but the pass was deflected by the Wakefield double team.  Mahoney took the ball on an end around on fourth down but was unable to turn the corner.  Woburn turned the ball over on downs.
Starting on their own ten yard line, Wakefield again ran three straight times up the middle against Woburn’s D, reaching their own 25.  Three more runs up the middle seemed to be softening up the Woburn line.  It was 1st & 10 from their own 46 when the Warriors scored the first points allowed by Defensive Coordinator Tony Giglio’s 11 this season.  The RB took the hand off, slipped through the tired line and was off to the races.  After a failed conversion, Woburn led 14-6.
Woburn brought the ensuing kick out to the 50 yd line.  Chiary swept right for a gain of 8.  After a QB sack, Woburn faced 3rd & 5.  Duran took the hand off, broke two tackles and darted to the pylon.  Chiary booted the 2 pt. conversion and Woburn went into halftime leading 22-6.
Wakefield opened the second half on their own 35.  A big stop by Qualey and three botched snaps led to the ball being quickly turned over on downs.  Woburn would take over on the Wakefield 36.  Woburn pounded the ball down to the 13 yd line, where the drive stalled out.
Wakefield was buried deep in their own end.  Four short carries led to another 4 and out for the Warriors.  Tackles by Farren, Duran and Zolubos highlighted the stop.  Woburn took over on the Wakefield 22, looking to go in for the kill.  The first down snap was fumbled and recovered by a Warrior lineman on their own 23 as the third quarter expired.
A few short plays put Wakefield on their on 38.  1st & 10 saw linemen Cyret and Mahoney break through the line and close in on the QB.  The QB felt the pressure and lobbed a high pass.  CB Cash Kingstad leapt up and picked the pass off. Woburn had the ball on the Wakefield 42 yard line.
Kingstad fired a 14 yd strike to Zolubos, putting Woburn on the 28.  Duran took a hand off and barreled down to the 1.  1st & inches saw Kingstad dive in with the QB keeper.  Cash then hit a wide open Harkins for the extra point, Woburn led 29-6.  Woburn’s last possession would turn over on downs, after a beautiful 39 yard run from Gage Svelty was called back..
Woburn’s D-line, coached by John Lafferty and Mike Morgan, sealed the game after that.  Well rested, they locked down the Warrior running attack the rest of the way. The game would end 29-6, putting the D1’s at 2-0 on the season.  The Trojans travel to Lexington next Sunday, 9:30 a.m.  A special pom-pom wave goes out to the Loud and Proud D1 cheerleaders.  Great job girls!!
