Woburn D1 vs Watertown Sept 8th

D1 Trojans Open Strong
After five weeks of conditioning, coaching and more coaching, the Woburn Trojan D1 team was geared up to open it’s season this past Sunday.  Head Coach John Ferrone’s boys did not wait long to let the visiting Watertown team know that it was in for a long morning.
New addition to the team, Riley Duran opened the game with a booming kickoff, pinning Watertown in on their own seventeen   yard line.  Watertown lined up and looked ready to run. A muffed hand off led to a fumble.  Woburn’s defensive lineman Rennie Cyprian pounced all over the loose ball.  Offensive coordinator Ryan Ferrone called for a run up the middle.  Running back Kris Chiary burst through the middle untouched and found the end zone.  A Chiary run on the conversion put Woburn up 7-0 after 2 plays from scrimmage.
Another long kickoff was returned by Watertown to their own 32 yard line.  Watertown ran left for a 7 yard gain on first down. Second down they tried to sweep wide to the right.  Waiting for them deep in their backfield was cornerback Colin Harkins.  Harkins took the back down for a huge 8 yard loss.  This would be the theme of the game.  Harkins in the backfield, over and over again. The next two plays were runs up the middle.  Both runs were stuffed by linebackers Dylan Thompson and Riley Duran.
Woburn’s second possession found them starting on Watertown’s 32 yard line.  Dylan Zolubos took the ball for an easy 11 yard gain, up to the 25.  Gage Svelty got into the act with a quick run left for 10 yds.  Robert Lafferty took a hand off and rumbled forward for 8 more yards.  QB Alex Fishlin ran for two more yards.  First and goal from the 2 saw Lafferty rumble in for the score.  Will Mahoney scored on the conversion and Woburn was up 14-0.  Dylan Thompson jumped on another Watertown fumble as the first quarter ended, Woburn leading 14-0.
The second quarter opened with Woburn starting on the Watertown 40.  Dylan Zolubos carried twice.  The first was a huge 25 yd sprint down the right sideline. The next was a short dash up the middle.  A holding call pushed Woburn out to the 15.  QB Cash Kingstead handed off to Riley Duran, who cruised in untouched.  Duran ran in the conversion and Woburn was sailing, 21-0.  Defensive coordinator Tony Giglio’s squad went to work. Harkins went back to terrorizing the Watertown backfield. Registering two tackles, each for a five yard loss.  Duran stuffed a run for no gain and Will Mahoney added a tackle for a loss of six.  Starting on the Watertown 28, Thompson ran for 14 yds, then Zolubos another 9.  With :16 left in the half, Duran put the game away, scoring again.  Halftime saw Woburn up 27-0.
Coach Ferrone called off the dogs in the second half.  Woburn continually pounded the ball up the middle, running the clock down. The running game was dominant, thanks to blocking from the offensive line.  Eyan Russell, Seamus McCaffrey, Evan Vienneau, Jaden Russell, Killian Hayes, Owen Cyret and Tucker Hogeland all had a hand in opening huge holes.   The defense never rested.  The D Line refused to yield to Watertown.  Linemen Matt Qualey, Jake Daniell, Tyler Farren, Rennie Cyprian, Jack MacDonald, Angel Apaza, Sean Lafferty, Tim Freeley and Matt McCabe all contributed to the cause.
Cash Kingstead recorded a safety as time ran out, Woburn winning 29-0.  The Woburn coaching staff consists of Head Coach John Ferrone, Coordinators Tony Giglio and Ryan Ferrone, and Assistant Coaches Mike Morgan, John Lafferty and Robert Ronan. A special thank you to Team Mom Kathi Zolubos, to our chain gang, and to the volunteers at the Lafferty Snack Shack.  The Trojans host Wakefield next Sunday, 9:30 am. The D1 squad is sponsored by The Woburn Police Superior Officers, Local .  Lastly, a special shout out to our D1 cheerleaders!! Thank you for spurring the boys on…..
