Green Street Reopened After Traffic Accident

NStar on scene to fix falling pole.

  Wednesday, 3:10 p.m. — Woburn Police reopened Green Street just after 3 p.m. today after a traffic accident closed the road for nearly an hour. NStar responded to the scene around 3 p.m. to fix the pole, which had snapped in half and was hanging on by wires. Police remain on scene to assist with traffic during the pole repairs. Wednesday, 2:45 p.m. — Woburn Police were forced to shut down Green Street around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday after a traffic accident. According to police, one car crashed into a pole, snapping it in half. Officers on scene said the pole was being held up only by its wires. Police notified NStar of the emergency situation and closed the road to traffic. Several cars were diverted to Vernon Street. President Obama Names WPD Officer 'Top Cop'

Woburn Police Officer Mark Gibbons honored at National Police Week.

  Woburn Police Officer Mark Gibbons was named a "Top Cop" by President Barack Obama earlier this week in Washington, D.C. Officer Gibbons was one of 34 police officers honored during a White House ceremony Saturday, reported Reuters. President Obama said the "Top Cops" conducted "extraordinary acts of bravery," according to Reuters. On Sept. 6 of 2011, Officer Gibbons responded to the Four Corners jewelry robbery in which Officer Robert DeNapoli was shot several times by a suspect. Officer Gibbons returned fire and shot the suspect, Antonio Matos, who was captured and hospitalized. Matos has since been arraigned on charges stemming from the robbery and shooting.   Almost everyone has them—old, unused prescription drugs in their bathroom medicine cabinet. What do you do with them? Starting next week, you can bring them to the police station. Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone unveiled the MedReturn Drug Collection Unit program Friday morning. Through the program, which extends out to 29 county communities, residents will be able to dispose of prescription drugs in a free, safe and easy manner through large green collection boxes found at the police station. “Prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing problem in our communities,” said Leone Friday. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that 2.4 million Americans abused prescription drugs for the first time in 2011—one-third of…

Missing Woman Found In Woods

After an active search by Woburn Police, woman was found Friday afternoon.

  A missing woman was found after a 90-minute active search by Woburn Police Friday afternoon. A woman in her 30s walked away from NuPath on New Boston Street toward the train tracks around 3 p.m. Friday. Officers were called to the scene and began searching for the woman along the train tracks, said Woburn Police Capt. Robert Rufo. While patrolmen and detectives walked the tracks, others drove to the area in cruisers. Officers in dispatch notified the MBTA of the search along the tracks. Capt. Rufo said the woman began to walk south along the tracks. "A relative contacted her and kept her on the phone, asking her questions of where she was," said Capt.
