Gift restores history to WMHS building.
Theresa Christerson, Woburn Memorial High School senior class advisor, along with the class officers recently announced the Class of 2012 gift. According to Christerson, the class donated money toward the restoration of the original 1906 archway from the old building of Woburn High. Residents enjoy student "Art Gallery."
Several Woburn Memorial High School art students visited New Horizons recently to speak with residents and showcase their artwork. The art show was part of the New Horizons' "Cruise Day," an event that features several cruise activities. The students were part of the "Art Gallery" segment.

Students and visitors learn at St. Charles School science and academic fair.
Blubber. No, not to cry. That fatty substance that keeps certain cold-water swimmers warm. Elyse Masandi turned blubber—OK, Crisco—into an award- winning science fair project. The seventh grader at St. Charles School took first place in her grade. Masandi made “blubber gloves” for visitors at the science fair to test. People who braved the “eeew” factor found that they couldn’t feel the cold water they plunged their gloved hand into at all, according to the Woburn resident. Some hockey players told Masandi that, she said, they’d use her device for hockey. One of 100 contestants, she's an eighth-grader at the Kennedy Middle School.
Holly Brown and her classmates picked up their pencils and began to answer multiple-choice questions about geography. One of the questions: “The Bitterroot Range is located on the border of Montana and what other state?” Brown, an eighth-grader at the Kennedy Middle School, put herself on the map by winning the school level of the National Geographic Geography Bee. Now, she’s headed to state competition. Brown has been putting in time after homework—about half an hour, but not every day—to study geography, from US cities and states to international locations to physical geography—“like the continental shelf”—to bodies of water and cultural geography. “There’s a lot of stuff,” she said. The team beat Burlington to win this weekend's tournament, after notching wins in three of four games. The sixth grade girls' team also won their tournament, winning all four games played. The deadline to submit entries for the contest is the first week of May.
Middlesex County middle and high school students, including those in Woburn, are invited to participate in the fourth annual PSA [Public Service Announcement] project. The Middlesex County District Attorney's office, in conjunction with Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, Inc., started the PSA Project in 2009 "in an effort to spark a positive dialogue and encourage teens to speak out about important issues affecting youth," according to a press release. Participants this year are asked to focus on the importance of promoting healthy, substance-free relationships. The Woburn Adult Evening School is still accepting registrations for the Spring 2011 term. Registration by mail closes on Friday, March 9; classes begin on March 13. Interested adults may also register in person tomorrow night (March 6) and March 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. or on the first night of classes. However, classes often fill up before the first night, according to the school. In addition to classes in several categories, Adult Evening School Director Edward Kaufman said a GED course is also available. The GED test will be held in May.
