Softball superstar led New England Collegiate Conference in batting.
A Woburn woman has taken New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year honors for her softball performance this year. Lesley College's Jenna Fralick of Woburn was given the honor last week. In addition to Player of the Year honors, Fralick was also named to the NECC First Team, along with four of her teammates. Fralick led the league in batting with a .549 average during league games. She also had a 1.000 fielding percentage at third base. Fralick was a perfect 11-11 in stolen base attempts in NECC games. She finished second in the league with nine walks, third with 28 hits and ninth with 17 runs batted in. Will begin communications job in June.
A Woburn man will work with USA Hockey in June, according to the national hockey organization. USA Hockey announced that Brian Smith of Woburn is the recipient of the 2012-2013 Brian Fishman Internship. Smith will work in the communications department at USA Hockey's national office in Colorado Springs, Colo., beginning in June. According to USA Hockey, the Fishman Internship is awarded to a college graduate pursuing a career in athletic communications. Smith will graduate from Boston College later this month. Brian Fishman was the manager of communications and marketing for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. He died unexpectedly on Jan. 7, 1999, at age 28. Woburn native Mitchell Clegg has signed a minor league baseball contract. Clegg, 25, will play for the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. The baseball team announced that Clegg joined the Pheasants Tuesday after three years in the Washington Nationals organization. Clegg was signed by the Nationals after being drafted by the Major League Baseball organization in 2009. In his first year, the Woburnite was a mid-season all-star in the New York-Penn League. Last year, Clegg pitched for Potomac (Class A) as a starter and reliever, with a 4-7 record, 5.50 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 29 appearances. The Sioux Fall Pheasants season begins on May 17.

Bowdoin College senior breaks record.
Woburn resident Chris Martin was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Field Performer of the Week after a record-breaking performance. According to Bowdoin College, Martin recorded a 14.54-meter triple jump, breaking a 20-year-old record held by Jeff Mao (1992). Martin also posted a 6.75-meter long jump. The Woburnite claimed both the long jump and triple jump titles at the University of New Hampshire's Wildcat Invitational last weekend. "Chris has been working hard to make some great jumps this spring," said head coach Peter Slovenski. "He's healthy and strong, and he's running better on the runway.
